Shillong, Nov 20: Three labourers were rescued but another two were killed in a landslide during construction work at Danakgre on the outskirts of Tura today.
The three people were rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services. The incident occurred when five labourers were digging the foundation to construct retaining walls when the soil above them suddenly collapsed, engulfing them completely.
According to Peniwel T Sangma, Divisional Commandant of Home Guards, Tura, the SDRF was activated at 9:30am when he received a call from district authorities about the incident. The SDRF, in a joint operation with the Fire and Emergency Services, were able to rescue three labourers and extricate the body of another.
A fifth labourer had already been taken to hospital before the SDRF arrived. However, It was later learned that he had succumbed to his injuries at Tura Civil Hospital, taking the death toll to two.
