Shillong, Oct 28: The Meghalaya High Court has disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) petition, filed over the disruption of the functioning of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) of the GHADC through its President Brithen M Sangma submitted before the court today that they are not and shall not in any manner disrupt the functioning of the District Council.
A division bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh said the court has been informed that normalcy has been restored in the functioning of the District Council and hence, the PIL is disposed of.
The petition was filed by Tokyo R. Marak after the indefinite strike by the staff, who were left unpaid for about 45 months due to the financial crisis, that led to the total breakdown of the functioning of the district council..
The Meghalaya government this month has released Rs 79.5 crore for pending salaries to be cleared. Rs 11 crore is towards dues payable to the GHADC, while Rs 68.5 crore is an advance payment against future royalties. The money was released to an escrow account, which is meant specifically for salary disbursement.
