Shillong, Oct 8:  Ri Bhoi Police has launched a massive overnight checking along National Highway 6 following a concerning rise in road traffic accidents in recent weeks.

The 12-hour operation kicked off at 7 pm yesterday and wrapped up this morning wherein over 2,500 vehicles were penalised for various violations.

Police found many riders and passengers not buckling up or wearing helmets, vehicles with outdated papers, lane indiscipline and speeding. Drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and unauthorised vehicle modifications were also penalised.

Police collected a fine of Rs 8 lakh during the checking.

“This is a proactive step to instill discipline on our roads,” said a senior police official, noting that the collected fines will aid infrastructure improvements.

The Ri Bhoi police are also rallying citizens to join the road safety brigade by reporting violations via WhatsApp at 6909300160. Residents can just snap a picture or shoot a video of traffic offenses and send it over — the police are counting on them to be their “eyes and ears” for safer roads.

The police also thanked Good Samaritans and media personnel who supported them during the drive.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Dr Mukul Sangma praised the initiative, especially in light of recent tragedies, including the Thadrang accident that claimed young lives and another mishap involving two government drivers under the influence of alcohol.

Dr Sangma, who was travelling through the Shillong-Guwahati route, witnessed the checking and stopped to commend the police officers.

He stressed that such vigilant checks are vital to safeguarding lives and ensuring accountability on the highways.

The Hid Foundation, Shillong too has appreciated Ri-Bhoi Police led by Senior Superintendent Vivekanand Singh Rathore. These initiatives have significantly contributed to preventing road accidents, illegal parking, drunken driving cases, and other traffic-related issues, the foundation said.

It acknowledged the dedication and commitment of the police in ensuring road safety and maintaining law and order in the region.

HID Chief Executive Officer Jinysha D. Maiong expressed concern over the rising number of road accident cases, often caused by reckless driving, speeding, and irresponsible behaviour of some drivers, especially two-wheeler riders.

The foundation has appealed general public to support and cooperate with the police to ensure safe movement for everyone and safeguard lives. “Together, we can make our roads safer and reduce the number of accidents,” it added.
