Shillong, Oct 6: Meghalaya Power Minister, Metbah Lyngdoh, on Monday inaugurated the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) — Indo-German Energy Programme Partnership Summit for State Designated Agencies (SDAs) in Shillong.

The summit is a collaborative event between the Ministry of Power and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to review the physical and financial progress of the Eastern and Northeastern zone State Designated Agencies (SDA) on energy conservation.

A total of 11 SDAs, policymakers, officials from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and representatives of GIZ attended the summit.

During the inaugural session, Lyngdoh stated that the meeting is taking place at a crucial time when energy conservation and efficient electricity use have become not only developmental goals but also of national importance.

He emphasised that as the demand for power continues to grow across the country, the pressure on resources, infrastructure, and the environment is increasing rapidly. This reminds us of the need to save energy in order to generate energy, and what we save today will shape the future for our next generations, he said.

Regarding Meghalaya’s commitment to this mission, the Power Minister informed that the government, through the State Designated Agency under the Power Department, has taken several steps to promote energy efficiency across the state.

“These steps include creating awareness and encouraging the general public to use LED lighting and star-rated appliances, engaging with schools and colleges to build awareness on energy conservation and efficient use of electricity, conducting capacity building programs on energy conservation building code, and supporting renewable energy adoption,” Lyngdoh said.

The minister described the regional meet as a powerful example of cooperative federalism. Despite differences in size, geography, and power requirements, states are united by their commitment to energy conservation.

He highlighted the importance of sharing experiences, innovations, and challenges among states to learn from one another and create a stronger, unified approach to saving energy and improving efficiency.

Lyngdoh also expressed appreciation for the support and guidance of the BEE to the SDAs, which has played a vital role in creating a national framework and empowerment.

Regarding energy conservation, he emphasised that it is not only about technology or infrastructure but also about behaviour change.

“Simple actions like turning off lights and appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient devices, opting for public transport or electric vehicles, and harvesting solar energy can make a big difference when adopted by millions of people,” he said.

He urged everyone to ensure that every unit of power generated and reaching the people is wisely used as responsible citizens.

Lyngdoh assured the gathering that Meghalaya will continue to play an active role in the national mission for energy efficiency and conservation, working together to build a greener, smarter, and more sustainable India.
