Shillong, Oct 2: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has objected to the list of selected candidates for MBBS course in various medical colleges under the State quota as two non tribal names made it under the Meghalaya quota.
KSU General Secretary Donald V Thabah said one Diya Ghosh and Tanushka Chakravarty were selected for MBBS seats when other Khasi students have higher marks.
Ghosh, with a NEET score of 472, and Chakravarty, with a score of 442, have been allowed to study MBBS outside the state under the Unreserved Category, when the category is open to all residents of Meghalaya, including Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities, Thabah said, adding, entry under the category is based solely on merit.
Thabah stated that the selection process is biased, sidelining indigenous tribes, despite a large number of Khasi students aspiring to study MBBS.
He said that many Khasi students have higher NEET scores than the two selected non-tribals. One Khasi girl scored higher than Ghosh, and seven other locals have scored higher than Chakravarty, he pointed out.
The KSU argues that if two Khasi students are eligible for the Unreserved Category, two more Khasi students from the waiting list should be eligible for the Khasi-Jaintia Category.
Thabah said this violates the rights of the Khasi students demanded the government to remove the names of the two students. He also warned that the KSU will take action to protect the rights of Khasi students.
