Shillong, Sep 30: Winston Tony Lyngdoh of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) was elected unopposed as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) today.
The first-time MDC, representing Nongthymmai, faced no opponent as the VPP has an absolute majority in the council and his election was rubber stamped by the party a few days ago.
The election followed the resignation of former CEM Shemborlang Rynjah due to health reasons. KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana expressed confidence in Lyngdoh’s leadership, stating that he expects a stable executive committee that prioritises people’s welfare and collaborates with opposition MDCs.
In his address, Lyngdoh thanked the ruling MDCs, opposition leader and members for their support.
Responding to allegations of a gap in the functioning of the previous EC with opposition members, Lyngdoh maintained that his door is open to all members and he looks forward to working collaboratively to address key issues for the good of the people and the KHADC.
Leader of the Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne urged Lyngdoh to create a friendly atmosphere, promoting unity and closeness with opposition members to work together on issues concerning the people.
Laban-Mawprem MDC Ricky Shullai, an independent, expressed hope that Lyngdoh’s experience as Executive Member of Trade will strengthen the smooth functioning of the district council.
UDP MDC from Nongpoh, Rona Khymdeit, urged the VPP to prioritise stability and smooth functioning of the council over the next four years, given its absolute majority.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh informed that he will not have a Deputy CEM to share the burden of governance, saying that the role was not required and that not having one would save the KHADC money.
He also made clear that the new EC would pursue continuity and not change the priorities of the previous EC.
