Shillong, Sep 30: A week-long celebration to observe the International Week of the Deaf concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony held at St. Anthony’s College auditorium, here on September 27.
The event was organized by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Deaf Association.
Thirty-three winners were awarded certificates and prizes across various competition categories. 450 participants demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm and sportsmanship across the events. Forty-four students and nine sportspersons received the Academic & Sports Achievement Awards, recognising their excellence.
A token of appreciation was presented to Sr. Merly Tom Kazakazil in recognition of her longstanding dedication to the deaf community.
The celebration saw participation from various special schools, invitees, and more than 500 attendees, making it a truly inclusive and memorable occasion.
Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla attended the valedictory function as the chief guest.
The association has expressed its appreciation to the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Bridget Warshong, Deputy Commissioner for PWDs, for their unwavering support and commitment to empowerment.
General Secretary of the association Johnkit Maring remarked, “This milestone marks a first in our association’s history organising such impactful events.”
