Shillong, Sep 13: In a continued effort at enhancing governance, improving infrastructure, and ensuring optimal use of public resources for the welfare of the community, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Hema Nayak undertook an extensive field visit on September 12.
The field visit was to review the functioning of various departments under Betasing C&RD Block.
During her visit to the KGVB (Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya) School in Adugre village, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with students from Class VI to X.
Observing learning gaps among some students, Nayak stressed the need for additional academic support to help them improve.
She also engaged with the teaching staff to address their concerns and assured them that a special meeting will soon be convened with KGVB schools from Betasing and Zikzak Blocks to resolve outstanding issues.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed technical officials of the Betasing Block office to explore possibilities of constructing an approach road to the school under MGNREGS, citing its poor condition.
She also visited the ongoing work on the Betasing–Mellim road stretch.
Noting significant damage due to erosion by the Dilni River, Nayak urged officials of PWD (Roads) to expedite restoration and protective embankment work on the affected portions of the road.
At Betasing PHC, the Deputy Commissioner held discussions with the Medical Officer and staff on various public health concerns, including vaccination drives, teenage pregnancy, mental health, IMR, MMR, and quality of OPD and IPD services.
Issues such as manpower shortages and poor internet connectivity—impacting data uploads and Aadhaar linkage to MHIS—were brought to her attention, and she assured appropriate follow-up.
The Deputy Commissioner also visited the Malchapara Horti Hub, where she inspected the Tissue Culture Lab and Training Hall constructed under the Centre of Excellence.
Expressing concern over the non-functional status of the facility since its establishment, Nayak suggested the possibility of utilising the same on convergence model with other departments or allowing cooperative bodies to use the space through an MoU for optimal use of infrastructure.
She also reviewed polyhouses constructed under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) and assessed other infrastructure facilities on the site.
Concluding her visit, she inspected the Sale Depot and Textile Gallery at Chengkompara village, built by the Department of Handloom & Textiles in 2015–16.
Regretting that the building had remained unused to date, Nayak requested the concerned officials to provide detailed records of the facility for discussion on its potential repurposing—possibly as a temporary office for departments currently lacking office space.
