Shillong, Sep 12: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Joplyn Shylla today communicated her strong disapproval over the state government’s decision to adjust tax rates on alcohol so as to encourage the increased consumption of liquor.
The state cabinet had approved such a move yesterday. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the adjustments are expected to result in increased consumption of alcohol, which would lead to higher revenues for the state exchequer.
“Such a move is deeply concerning as it risks worsening social issues in our communities,” Shylla said today.
She opined that this policy could lead to more broken homes, destabilise families and vulnerable children growing up in a disturbed environment.
“These children, who face emotional and social challenges, may turn to drugs and other harmful behaviours as a means of escape, further aggravating the drug menace already affecting our state,” Shylla added. “We urge the government to reconsider this decision and prioritise the welfare of families, the well-being of our children and the long-term health of our society over short-term revenue gains.”
The news report on the cabinet decision saw many citizens pile on the government on Highland Post’s social media pages. Many of the comments were sarcastic and/or critical, with some wondering what other vices the government might encourage in order to boost tax revenue.
