Shillong, Sep 8: The Meghalaya Assembly paid tributes to the departed former Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, veteran Meghalaya legislator Samarendro Sangma, and others on the first day of the autumn session here today.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma described the Malik as an approachable and open-minded leader who was deeply concerned about the welfare of the people of Meghalaya. He recalled his close association with the former governor and said he was open minded, flexible and willing to take time to understand matters related to the state.
Sangma also paid tribute to Shibu Soren, whom he remembered as a humble yet towering tribal leader. He said Soren’s passing was “not just a great loss for Jharkhand, but for tribal communities across the country.”
Leader of opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma while condoling the death of Late Samarendro said that he spent time interacting with children and was accessible to people of all walks of life.
Dr. Sangma said that Malik was a politician of a different breed who called a spade a spade. “His innings is an evidence of caliber, commitment and qualities,” the leader of opposition said.
On Soren, he said that the former Jharkhand Chief Minister was instrumental in bringing together all tribals of the country.
According to him Jharkhand as a state was carved out of Bihar due to the realisation of the collective endeavour of the visionary leader.
Mairang MLA and United Democratic Party MLA, Metbah Lyngdoh said that Samarendro who was elected uncontested in 1972 from Salmanpara had a unique character and contributed to the welfare of the state.
On Malik, the Mairang MLA said that understood the importance of farmers.
Assembly Speaker, Thomas A Sangma while paying tributes to the departed leaders said that Samarendro who was a prominent leader of the APHLC stood firm for the cause of the people of Meghalaya.
