Shillong, Aug 30: A resident has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to set up shelter homes for stray dogs in the Shillong city and all district headquarters of the state, conduct mass sterilisation and vaccination programmes to prevent the spread of rabies and to make registration and tagging compulsory for dog owners.
Joannes JTL Lamare, a resident of Nongkremm in a letter to the Chief Minister expressed concern over the presence of street dogs in the busy roads near schools, colleges and market places, which he said, are causing inconvenience and dangers to the people.
Lamare said he had also met with former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi wherein she suggested that Meghalaya should also have a proper management policy for street dogs. He stated the Gandhi suggested setting up of a hospital for animals like Sikkim, apart apart from the existing veterinary hospitals and dispensaries.
