Shillong, Aug 20: State government spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh today assured that the State will consider formation of a Territorial Army, which will be taken up during the cabinet meeting on August 26.
He said the State will “proactively and positively” pursue the matter.
Since the subject also concerns the Union government, all details relating to the Territorial Army will be discussed by the cabinet, he added.
Lyngdoh said idea for formation of a Territorial Army was his, when he was the president of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
The idea of a local paramilitary unit or “People’s Army” was first raised during the 2001 Pyrdiwah incident.
Two days ago, the KSU revived its long-pending call for setting up a Territorial Army in Meghalaya, on the lines of the one recently sanctioned for Mizoram to guard the state’s vulnerable borders.
