Around 70 percent of West Garo Hills’ recent Covid-19 cases are from urban areas, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was told during a review meeting he attended on the status of the pandemic in the district today.
The second wave has seen more than 900 cases of which more than 500 are active. More than 81,000 people have been vaccinated against the disease so far, the CM was told, in the district.
However, Director of Health Services Dr Menakshi Sangma informed Conrad that Tura Civil Hospital does not have enough manpower to deal with the Covid patients in the hospital’s care.
Referring to the strategy adopted in Shillong for management of Community Corona Care Centres, where the asymptomatic and those patients who needed mild oxygen treatment are being kept, and where the beds, food, etc are provided by community organisations and the staff are provided by the government, Conrad said the same model can be followed in Garo Hills to reduce the burden on hospitals.
