Seven people were arrested after they “stole” two vehicles that they had hired from Guwahati.
Information was received today morning at around 5:30am via telephone from Nationwide Emergency Response System (NERS) Shillong that two Assam-registered Mahindra Thar vehicles (AS 01FY 2524 and AS 01FL 8848) had been stolen and will travel through Umkiang in East Jaintia Hills. A police checkpoint was set up immediately at Damchera and, at 6:30pm, both vehicles were intercepted.
Seven occupants – three male and four female – were detained and the three men produced fake Aadhaar cards. They were taken in for a “thorough interrogation”, police said and the owners of the vehicles came in person to state that the occupants hired the Thars to travel from Guwahati to Shillong but, “without any information and with ill intention” they removed the GPS tracking system on one of the vehicles and proceeded towards Manipur through Mizoram.
The theft was also reported to police in Dispur, Assam and authorities there have asked those in Meghalaya to hold the vehicles and detain the occupants for further action against them.
