The Bharatiya Janata Party of South Shillong constituency today honoured 658 people working in different sectors who have so far gone “unrecognised”.
The ‘Noble Service Award 2022’ saw recipients ranging from workers in the Shillong Cantonment, Shillong Municipal Board, taxi drivers, domestic workers, midday meal workers, who all received the award for the first time. Other recipients included Anganwadi and ASHA workers.
Cabinet minister and local MLA Sanbor Shullai said that domestic and municipal workers are vital to keeping Shillong clean and if they did not turn up for work there would be chaos in the state capital.
“The streets will be littered with garbage if the municipal worker goes on strike. Similarly, if a domestic worker does not turn up there will be laundry and dishes piled up,” Shullai said.
He also informed that a total of Rs 14 lakh was spent in today’s distribution of awards and financial assistance, which came from his MLA salary. Shullai added that the assistance will be increased every year.
An anganwadi worker informed that the amount received would be as much as Rs 5,000 and that through this financial assistance it would help them in running their families.
