Shillong, Dec 18: In an open statement to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, shared via a video with the media today, Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit stated that six months have passed since the expert committee submitted its report, which has not been released to the public.
The expert committee referred to by the VPP is the one constituted to look into the state’s job reservation policy. It was formed in 2023 following intense pressure and a hunger strike launched by Basaiawmoit.
The state government appears unwilling to make the report public, despite repeated reminders from the party.
Basaiawmoit warned that if the government fails to announce the expert committee’s report immediately, the party will be compelled to resume its agitation.
The current reservation policy entitles members of the Garo and Khasi-Jaintia communities to 40 percent of state government jobs each even though the Garo population is significantly smaller than the Khasi-Jaintia population.
