Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) today claimed that they have apprehended 57 alleged “Bangladeshis” who entered the state at Lad Umroi.
According to the HYC, these people were travelling in a bus bearing registration number WB 87 0642 on July 19 at 7 pm.
HYC Ri Bhoi district president, Hercules Suting stated they had produced passports and visas and told them they were on the way to Silchar, Assam. He said some wanted to come to Shillong and to visit Sohra.
“But when asked if they will be staying for the night they did not provide any clear answer,” Suting said.
The HYC said they were not satisfied with the answers and later handed them over to the police at Umroi Police Station.
After checking the documents police let them off stating that all are headed towards Silchar, the pressure group said.
The HYC members followed these people and found out that they did not go through the by-pass road leading to Silchar through the Mawryngkneng-Jowai road but headed to Guwahati.
Meanwhile, the HYC said that today the same group came to Lad Umroi and got into Sumo vehicles and headed to Sohra.
The HYC has urged authorities to activate the infiltration check gates throughout the state to ensure that no Bangladeshis enter the state illegally.
It may be mentioned that in the wake of the situation in Bangladesh the HYC had asked its members to keep vigil to ensure that no illegal migrants enter Meghalaya.
