Four legislators from the State, two from NPP, one from Trinamool Congress and one independent, are likely to officially join the BJP later this week.
Two NPP legislators Benedic R. Marak and Ferlin Sangma (both from NPP) and Himalaya M. Shangpliang have recently resigned from their membership in the Assembly in order to switch over to the BJP.
Independent MLA Samuel M. Sangma has resigned as associate member of the UDP. He has openly stated that he would be joining the BJP soon.
Sources said that Samuel may resign as MLA in the coming days in order to make a switch over to the saffron party.
Sources also said that the four MLAs would be welcomed into the BJP in New Delhi in the presence of BJP chief J P Nadda and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The four legislators have recently met Sarma at his office in Guwahati and were told that they would be inducted into the BJP at a function to be held in New Delhi.
“They will be joining the party soon after the Gujarat Assembly elections,” BJP sources said today.
The final phase of Gujarat elections will be held tomorrow.
BJP sources also said that “some more MLAs have also sent feelers” to the party although the identity of the legislators was not revealed.
Elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held in Meghalaya by March 2023.
