In a remarkable step towards environmental sustainability, Riatsamthiah, a locality in Shillong, is on track to becoming a model community with its initiative to promote smokeless kitchens.
With the backing of the PM Ujjwala Scheme, the locality distributed 38 cooking gas cylinders and stoves to families under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category today.
The distribution event led by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, witnessed the presence of Headman Mariahom Kharkarang and executive members of Riatsamthiah locality.
Indian Oil representative, Sushwati Mudoi speaking at the function, highlighted the initiative not merely as a scheme but a concerted effort towards a healthier and eco-friendly environment.
She said that there is a lot of carbon emission and pollution in the world and now is the time to think for the future generation.
“We are proud that the northeast is rich in natural resources. We have plants, trees but now time has come to start preserving for our next generation,” Mudoi said.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the urgency of such initiatives to preserve the environment and provide a healthier life to every family.
Despite the region’s abundance of natural resources, she pointed out that traditional cooking methods contribute to health issues, including asthma-like illnesses.
“The PM Ujjwala Scheme is to restore our environment since we have haphazardly cut down our forests and secondly is for our health purpose,” she said.
As part of the program, a demonstration on gas fitting and education about cooking gas usage was provided to the beneficiaries.
Many recipients, using LPG for the first time, expressed gratitude towards the government’s policy, acknowledging the benefits for their health and time savings.
The Riatsamthiah locality’s proactive step not only aligns with the national push for cleaner energy but also serves as an inspiration for other communities to adopt sustainable practices. This initiative is a testament to the community’s commitment to a greener and healthier future.
