A 29-year-old man travelling in a small pickup truck died on the spot in a road traffic accident on National Highway 6 near Shangbangla, Ri-Bhoi, today.
The accident occurred around 4:25pm when an Assam-registered Tata Ace vehicle (AS 25EC 2365), driven by Md Maqbool Alam from Barkagaon in Bihar, was en route from Sonapur to Nongpoh. Upon reaching Shangbangla, the vehicle rammed into the centre divider, causing it to overturn.
There were two passengers in the vehicle – Md Arif (also from Barkagaon) and Md Ezaj Ansari from Bishnpur Keshar in Bihar. Due to the severity of the accident, Arif sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to them on the spot. His body was taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for an autopsy. The other two individuals travelling in the vehicle were injured.
Nongpoh police have informed the family of the deceased and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
