The State government has constituted a 28-member committee to look into aspects for preservation of Garo culture and heritage.
The formation of the committee assumes significance after the controversy surrounding the demolition of the cenotaph at Lower Babupara, Tura.
According to the notification issued on April 3, the committee will be headed by Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak. Other members of the committee are Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, Secretary in-charge arts and culture RP Marak and GHADC Chief Executive Member Albinius R Marak
According to the terms of reference, the committee will identify and evaluate sites of historical importance in respect of Garo culture and suggest steps to be taken for preservation and protection of heritage sites and cultural value.
The committee will also suggest a broad mechanism towards overall preservation of Garo culture and tradition, language etc besides seeking views of all stakeholders concerned.
