A 22-year old man was arrested by South Garo Hills police in connection with the murder and sexual assault of a 17-year old near Dimapara village.
The accused identified as Bimstar R Marak of Dangsugre village was arrested yesterday.
According to a social media post by the district police, an investigation into the matter was undertaken after which the suspect was identified.
“Based on information, the in-charge of Dimapara Infiltration Checkpoint apprehended the alleged accused from his residence in the village of Dangsugre for his involvement in the crime,” said the post.
Further after the arrest, the accused has been brought to Baghmara Womens’ PS for further necessary action.
While the arrest of one of the suspects has answered some of the questions of what took place, information of whether the crime was done only by the accused or there were more accomplices is yet to be answered.
While the post-mortem report could have shed further light on the findings, the SP could not be contacted for more information into the case.
Police had recovered the teenager’s body on December 3 near near Dangsugre, the same village where the accused allegedly hails from, days after she went missing after she had gone to her school in Dalu to give her SSLC selection test on December 1.
The mutilated body of the victim also bore marks of sexual assault.
Meanwhile, the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has condemned the gruesome murder of the student and demanded the case be tried under the fast track court.
“Crime against women can never be tolerated for the sake of a healthy society,” said president of ADE, Dalseng Bira Ch Momin.
