Another two deaths connected to Covid-19 were reported in Meghalaya today, which put fatalities reported in the state this past month at 21.
One of those who died was reported from East Khasi Hills, with the other in South Garo Hills.
Barasha Rani Das (22) of Assam was admitted to NEIGRIHMS on April 28 and passed away the same day. Cause of death was Type I respiratory failure with SLE with dilated Cardiomyopathy with Hypothyroidism and Covid-19 positive.
Dhaneswar Debarma (35) of Khowai Hatkata Bazar, Tripura who is a coal exporter at Gasuapara in South Garo Hills was brought dead to Dalu CHC yesterday at 1.30 pm. He was tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, 229 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the State today, a record for 2021. There were new cases that came in from all 11 districts of Meghalaya, with 82 of the total being among returnees.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 124 of the new cases – 47 among returnees, nine armed forces/paramilitaries, 27 high-risk contacts, four influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), six through screening, three severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), one health worker, two police, two in Laban, three in Laitumkhrah, four in Madanrting, three in Mawbah, two in Mawdiangdiang, two in Mawlai, one in Mawprem, two in Nongmynsong, three in Nongrim Hills and one in Nongthymmai.
West Jaiñtia Hills reported 27 new cases (13 returnees, seven ILIs, five high-risk, two through screening), East Jaiñtia Hills 17 (10 high-risk, six returnees, one ILI), East Garo Hills 14 (11 high-risk, two health workers, one ILI), Ri-Bhoi 14 (seven through screening, four high-risk, three returnees), West Khasi Hills nine (seven returnees, two through screening), North Garo Hills nine (seven high-risk, one returnee, one health worker), West Garo Hills five (four returnees, one through screening), South West Khasi Hills five (all returnees), South Garo Hills four (all through screening) and South West Garo Hills one (through screening).
There were also 166 recoveries – 145 in East Khasi Hills, eight in West Jaiñtia Hills, five in Ri-Bhoi, five in East Jaiñtia Hills, two in West Garo Hills and one in West Khasi Hills.
There are now 1,592 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 1,072 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 164 and West Jaiñtia Hills 101.
In all, Meghalaya has had 16,846 Covid-19 cases, of which 1,592 are active, 15,083 have recovered and 171 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 89.54 percent. The fatality rate is 1.02 percent. More than 2.89 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered as of today in the state.
April has seen 2,781 new coronavirus cases in Meghalaya, 1,217 recoveries and 21 fatalities. At the start of the month there were only 49 active cases, spread between just three districts – West Garo Hills, East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi. The situation rapidly deteriorated this month, with the coming of the second wave.
