In a shocking incident from West Garo Hills district, a video showing a woman mercilessly dragged and beaten with sticks by men has gone viral, sparking outrage across the state.
The incident took place in Lower Teksagre under Damal Asim Police Station in Dadenggre at a school premises. At least four men are seen beating the woman in front of a mute crowd.
District police have taken cognisance of the incident and promptly arrested two persons involved in the assault. However, two other involved in the crime are yet to be apprehended.
Superintendent of Police, Abraham T Sangma said the crime took place on June 25. He said police have visited the place of occurrence and identified the victim as well as the accused who were close relatives of the woman.
Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused persons involved in the assault, he said.
A case is being registered at Tura Women PS against the appalling act.
“We request everyone to refrain from sharing the video further to protect the privacy and dignity of the victim. We also urge the public to remain calm and allow the law enforcement agencies to handle the situation,” the SP urged.
The Meghalaya State Women’s Commission has condemned the act and took suo moto cognisance of the case.
Vice Chairperson met with the SP this afternoon and sought for a thorough investigation into the assault.
The commission members will also meet the victim and do the follow up for further necessary action, a statement from the commission said.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment, Santa Mary Shylla also spoke to the SP and demanded strict punishment against the culprits as per law.
She said she will soon visit the victim and will hold a meeting with the district officials with an aim to ensure that such incidents of crime against women are stopped.
