One man and one woman were arrested by Ri-Bhoi police in yet another case of suspected drug smuggling.
Police yesterday received intelligence that two people will attempt to travel from Assam to Meghalaya in order to deliver drugs. On receiving the information, police began checking vehicles entering the state at Byrnihat.
At 11:30am, one Assam-registered vehicle (AS 01Z 8255) was stopped and a search found four boxes containing suspected heroin recovered from the possession of one of the occupants, namely Bina Sarkar (45) of 14th Mile, Burnihat, Assam.
The suspected heroin weighed approximately 45.31g. The vehicle, a Maruti 800, two mobile phones and the drugs were seized by police.
Sarkar and the other occupant, Phrangsngi Nongshli (34) of Saiden, Nongpoh, were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
