Representatives of youth bodies from two villages met with the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner today to register a complaint that clinker (the stony residue from burnt coal or from a furnace) is being openly dumped near the Umiam River, posing a danger to public and environmental health.
Led by Tynshain Makri and Baiateilang Lapang, who hail from Lumdaikhla Bhoirymbong and Umroi Nongrah, the complaint raised fears on behalf of local residents that the clinker will pose a hazard for those who use the river water for washing and bathing purposes.
Speaking to media persons, Lapang and Makri informed the DC, RM Kurbah, assured them that she will take immediate action, with a magistrate to carry out an inspection.
