The Office of the Joint Director of School Education and Literacy organised an awareness program with focus on ‘Foundational Literacy & Numeracy’ in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi to observe International Literacy Day.
The programme was held as part of the centrally-sponsored Ullas-Nav Bharat Saaksharta Kayakram scheme that aims to ensure education for all.
During the event, a public presentation was made about the ULLAS Mobile App (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) which was released by the central government for 2022-2027.
The aim of the app is to address various aspects of education for the current generation. This includes critical life skills such as financial literacy, digital literacy, commercial skills, healthcare awareness, childcare and education, and family welfare. Additionally, the app focuses on vocational skills development, basic education, and more.
The event was attended by teachers from RCLP, LP Government teachers, and students from the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).
Principal of District Institute Of Education and Training (DIET), N Thangkhiew, RL Laloo, Associate Professor and speaker on the ULLAS Mobile Apps, and S Shullai, Associate Professor, who spoke on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), V Nianglang, Joint Director of School Education & Literacy, Ri Bhoi were part of the programme.
Meanwhile in West Jaiñtia Hills, R.C.EVE Secondary School in Mihmyntdu celebrated the World Literacy Day today on the theme, “Promoting Literacy for a world in transition, Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”.
The school was established in 2004 with an aim to bring drop outs back to school. Headmaster of the school, Tina Lakiang said the celebration is not only about literacy but to mark the return of dropout students to school.
She said prior to 2004, the literacy rate of the village was only at 40 per cent but has risen to 95 per cent. The number of students studying in the school has reached 104, she added.
During the programme, students took part in poetry recitation, extempore speech and drawing and poetry competitions.
