ICAR-KVK Ri-Bhoi, in collaboration with the Division of Animal and Fisheries Science and the Block Management Unit of MSRLS Umling block, celebrated World Fisheries Day 2024 yesterday at Borjari village.
The event was held under the theme ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures’, inspired by the vision of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Naphi Lapang, Cluster Coordinator, who greeted the esteemed guests, farmers and SHG members. Bankitkupar Mukhim followed with an engaging session on the significance of World Fisheries Day, emphasising the critical role of fisheries in supporting livelihoods, ensuring food security, and sustaining rural economies.
Chandan Debnath, Senior Scientist, conducted an in-depth training session focused on disease management in carp. His presentation covered essential topics such as fish culture practices, effective management strategies, common fish diseases and preventive care measures. His insights aimed to equip farmers with practical knowledge to enhance productivity and sustainability in aquaculture.
Adding entrepreneurial perspectives to the discussion, young entrepreneur Elbertoni Ramde shared his valuable experiences and detailed the benefits of adopting the Integrated Fish Farming System. He highlighted how this approach integrates fish farming with other agricultural activities, offering economic, ecological and nutritional advantages to farmers.
The event also featured a demonstration of a water testing kit for analysing pH levels and dissolved oxygen in water, a critical component for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems. This practical session provided hands-on knowledge for farmers to monitor and improve water quality in their fish farms.
