A one-day workshop-cum-training programme for sanitation workers was organised at Marten disposal site here today, with an aim to achieve Swachh Bharat Mission’s objectives of creating clean, garbage-free cities.
The programme was organised by the PMU Team of Swachh Bharat Mission Urban Meghalaya in collaboration with the office of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB).
Over 250 drivers and lorry attendants from the city including representatives from the SMB as well as the Cantonment Board and from various villages in Shillong Urban Agglomeration (SUA), among others attended the workshop.
The training program is based on the educating people like sanitation workers, drivers, lorry attendants, and the informal waste workers on the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and the Meghalaya Waste Management Bylaws 2016.
While participating in this daylong workshop, the attendees had an opportunity to learn about waste segregation, collection as well as transportation and disposal. The goal is to ensure proper waste management in Shillong City.
Director of Urban and CEO of SMB, Prafulla Kr. Boro highlighted the important role of the drivers and lorry attendants have in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. He stressed that proper waste management is not only mandated by rules but also a collective responsibility.
He urged the workers to sensitise people to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Boro was optimistic that with collective work Shillong could become one among the cleanest cities of India.
