Public Works Minister Prestone Tynsong laid the foundation stone for the upgrade to the Shillong-Diengpasoh Road today.
The road is one of 10 such projects selected under Phase 1 of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project, which is supported by the World Bank.
The existing single-lane road will be doubled in width with a total length of 11.77 kilometres. Funded by the World Bank, this project will include widening, metalling and black-topping to connect Shillong, the New Shillong Township and Shillong Bypass.
In a meeting held at Mawdiangdiang Football Ground, Tynsong said that, once completed, this road will strategically transform the core road network in Meghalaya. Adding that Mawdiangdiang and its adjoining areas will become a centre of governance in years to come with more government institutions being set up in these areas, he said that the road will prove to be a boon to the people of the area.
