The Meghalaya State Commission for Women today asked police to register a suo moto case against those involved in heckling and tying a woman to a pole at a market place in Jowai last week.
“We have asked the police to register a suo moto case against the perpetrators involved in the criminal act,” MSCW chairperson Phidalia Toi told Highland Post over phone.
She said the woman was given legal counselling though she refused to file an FIR against the perpetrators.
A video had gone viral on social media which showed a woman being tied to a pole by some unknown persons in the crowd allegedly accused of pickpocketing.
No arrest has yet been made in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, former chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of child rights, Meena Kharkongor said the incident has brought shock and shame on how people can behave inhumanly and take law into their own hands.
“Are we still living in the Barbarian Era punishing people this way and uploading the same. Do we really belong to a Matrilineal Society? And where have all our values gone? This should be condemned and the police must bring to book all who are responsible including the ones who have uploaded the video on social media,” she said.
