Celebrating the strength and resilience of women, Synod College hosted the release of the book, ‘Women Pathfinders of Meghalaya’, edited by David Arnold Kharchandy, a compilation that honours the remarkable contributions of women in shaping the state’s cultural, social and political landscape.
The event was organised by the Women’s Cell and the Centre for Historical Research Synod College (CHRSC).
The event commenced with a special talk titled ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment’ delivered by Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, Head of the Urban and Regional Planning Division (URD), North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC). Her discourse emphasised the importance of gender equality, rights and empowerment in modern society.
Kharchandy, Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Secretary of the Centre for Historical Research at Synod College, then presented an overview of the book he edited. The book comprises 27 chapters dedicated to documenting the lives and contributions of pioneering women such as Rose Millian Bathew Kharbuli, Silbi Passah, Rebecca Suchiang, Holibon Marbaniang, Sweetymon Rynjah, Trinity Saioo, Tiplut Nongbri, Silverine Swer, Uma Purkayastha and many more. Their impactful work in governance, education, social activism and entrepreneurship has set new benchmarks for progress and leadership, he said.
The highlight of the event was the formal release of the book by Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon, who was the chief guest. Following the release, Syngkon delivered a speech acknowledging the invaluable role of women in Meghalaya’s development and emphasising the need for continued advocacy for women’s empowerment and leadership.
