A woman has filed a police complaint against North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma of multiple counts of rape.
The FIR was registered today with police in Shillong. The woman is a resident of the state capital.
In the complaint, the woman accused Sangma of raping her on multiple occasions from January 2020 to April 2021 at her residence or in a city hotel “on the pretext of marriage”.
In the first incident, described in lurid details, she accused Sangma of getting her drunk and then taking advantage of her. Though she wanted to file a police complaint against the MLA that day, he supposedly threatened her and then promised to marry the victim.
As a result of these promises, the woman said she continued her affair with the legislator and became pregnant by him. She then refused to terminate the pregnancy but Sangma, she added, refused to leave his wife (which the complainant says he had promised to do) and instead left her in April.
The FIR was shared with the media by activist Kingstone Bolwari Marak.
