The committee formed by the state government to look at areas disputed by Meghalaya and Assam in West Khasi Hills today visited Nongstoiñ and held a meeting with district authorities and traditional leaders.
The committee delegation was headed by cabinet minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa.
According to the district administration’s survey, Tarabari, one of the disputed areas, does not find mention in Meghalaya documents and all the adult villagers are registered voters of Assam, with all development schemes and programmes there being implemented by the neighbouring state.
Hahim, however, does fall under Meghalaya, Lyngwa added, and all development activities there are being carried out by the Meghalaya government, while the villagers have also been registered in the socio-economic and caste census of Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, in the Langpih sector, a few villages were removed during the delimitation process, like Hakumari (A) and Hakumari (B), by the delimitation committee of the Election Commission. However, apart from these two villages, all others falling under the Langpih sector belong to Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters, Tongkhar declined to comment on the committee’s report but added that it will be submitted to the government as a matter of course.
