Irresponsible driving behaviour during traffic jams will face strict and immediate penalties, West Jaintia Hills district police has warned.
The district has been experiencing frequent traffic jams particularly in the Wahmynsoo and Mookyndur area, primarily due to breakdown of goods-laden vehicles.
The Superintendent of Police said that these disruptions are further aggravated by the irresponsible behaviour of light motor vehicle drivers who disregard lane discipline by overtaking and occupying the entire road. When vehicles from the opposite direction follow suit, it leads to a gridlock, a statement said.
Such situation results in unnecessary delays, with vehicles often stuck for hours causing significant inconveniences to passengers, particularly those travelling for emergencies or medical reasons.
While appealing all motorists to strictly adhere to lane discipline and cooperate with traffic personnel in such situations to ensure swift clearance of traffic jams and avoid prolonged delays the SP also warned that any motorist found violating lane discipline during these incidents will face strict and immediate penalties.
“We look forward to the cooperation of the public in maintaining and ensuring the smooth and uninterrupted flow of traffic,” he added.
