Those found to be smoking in public in West Jaintia Hills could face a fine of Rs 200, the office of the district Superintendent of Police warned today.
As per Section 4 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 (COTPA), smoking in public places is prohibited and violators can be fined Rs 200.
Furthermore, Section 6(a) prohibits the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to a person below the age of 18 and Section 6(b) bans the sale of tobacco within 100 yards (300 feet) of any educational institution.
