Former Mawsynram MLA and adviser to the Education Department Himalaya M. Shangpliang today said that he will work hard to make sure that the NPP candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Ampareen Lyngdoh, wins the Shillong seat.
“The party made a good decision by deciding on the candidature of Ampareen Lyngdoh. She can be a winning candidate and I personally will work hard to make sure that she wins the seat,” Shangpliang told reporters here.
He also said that there is no truth in media reports that stated that he joined the NPP from the BJP with an eye on the ticket for the Lok Sabha poll from Shillong seat.
The former MLA reminded that when he joined the NPP on September 13 he had told the media that he came into the party without any pre-conditions.
He also said that he was happy to see that the NPP is growing from strength to strength with each passing day.
“To see that there are many seekers for the party ticket to fight elections shows that the NPP is growing. There is only one ticket and therefore only one aspirant will get to contest from the party,” Shangpliang added.
It may be mentioned that Shangpliang had changed four political parties since he took a plunge in politics in 2018.
He was elected as MLA from Mawsynram on the Congress ticket in 2018. He switched over to the Trinamool Congress in 2021.
Later he left the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP to contest the 2023 Assembly elections.
After losing the Assembly polls from the Mawsynram constituency, he reportedly sought a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Shillong seat.
He resigned from the BJP in September this year. Then State BJP president Ernest Mawrie said that Shangpliang quit the party as he could not get assurance of a Lok Sabha poll ticket.
