Spurring hope that Sohra civil sub-division may be upgraded into a district, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said creation of new districts in the State will be decided by his government after examining all aspects.
“These are obviously very big decisions to make and we have to see all aspects and examine all areas. We are not undermining the demands made by the citizens of the State,” Sangma told media persons.
“For districts we will only take a call after examining everything. So as of now we are still examining those decisions,” he added.
While declining to give the number of the new districts and blocks to be created by the government, Sangma said, “We have inaugurated the Rambrai C&RD block and Siju C&RD block but it is not appropriate for me to give the list right now.”
“I will make sure that all of you are informed when the inauguration takes place,” he added.
It may be mentioned that Sangma had recently assured to examine the demand for creation of Sohra district by upgrading it from the sub-division level.
During the meeting with a delegation of Sohra District Demand Forum (SDDF) on October 26, the chief minister had assured to send the files relating to the demand to the chief secretary to initiate the process and examine all relevant matters.
The SDDF which has been spearheading the issue since 2018 had demanded that the headquarters of the proposed Sohra district should be in Sohra.
There are also demands in Garo Hills for upgradation of Dadenggre civil sub-division into a district.
Both Sohra and Dadenggre civil sub-divisions were established in 1982 and are the oldest sub-divisions in the State.
