Shillong, Aug 14: The outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today said it will not return for peace talks with the government.
In an email statement HNLC self-styled general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said if the government remains “inflexible, unwilling to recognize the historical realities and political aspirations of the Hynñiewtrep people, we will never return to peace talks.”
He stated that its resolve to “safeguard sovereignty and dignity is unshakeable”, and referred to its men as “fallen heroes” who “gave their lives for the cause of the people.”
The HNLC said that their supporters, including the public and pressure groups, strengthened its movement. “Our fight will continue with steadfast determination until the government presents a political solution rooted in the true history and aspirations of the Hynniewtrep people,” it added.
Peace talks between the government and the militant group broke down in January 2024. The HNLC cited unresolved grievances and accused the state government of a “lack of seriousness” in addressing key issues.
