Expressing confidence to win the upcoming Assembly elections from Sohiong constituency, UDP candidate Synshar Kupar Thabah said he would continue the works and legacy of his late uncle Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh.
“I am here as his replacement. I am here as a continuation of his work and his legacy,” Thabah told media persons after filing his nomination paper at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here today.
He was accompanied by UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh and hundreds of party supporters from Sohiong.
Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on April 21 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is April 24.
Election to the Sohiong Assembly seat will be held on May 10 and counting on May 13.
Thabah is a UDP replacement for the polls after the party’s candidate Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh passed away on February 20.
The other candidates who have already filed their nominations are sitting MLA Samlin Malngiang (NPP), S Osborne Kharjana (Congress), Sandondor Ryntathiang (HSPDP), Seraph Eric Kharbuki (BJP) and Stodingstar Thabah (Trinamool Congress).
There are a total of 34,783 voters in Sohiong constituency of which 17,687 are females.
The outcome of the election from Sohiong is crucial in adding to the strength of the ruling MDA-2 or the opposition.
In the February 27 elections, the NPP won 26 seats mostly from Garo Hills. The UDP won 11 seats while the BJP, HSPDP and the PDF won two seats each. Two independent candidates also emerged victorious.
Candidates have until April 20 to file their nominations. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place the following day and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature has been set as April 24. Counting of votes will take place on May 13.
