The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has attacked the State government for giving retired officials new jobs at the taxpayers’ expense.
In a release today, VPP leader Ardent Basaiawmoit said that Meghalaya is facing an “acute financial crunch” and cannot meet teacher salaries but the state’s leaders are on “appointment sprees”, giving retired bureaucrats new jobs.
Specifically, the VPP questioned why ex-Director General of Police R Chandranathan was appointed as security adviser following his retirement at the end of 2021 on a salary of Rs 75,000 plus perks and facilities.
Basaiawmoit also criticised the number of advisers to the Chief Minister there are.
“There are five advisers to the Chief Minister alone. We cannot understand why the Chief Minister of Meghalaya requires so many advisers. This clearly shows that this government is not interested in serving the people but only to protect its interest and satisfy its supporters,” he said.
The party leader said that it appears as if the security adviser job is a quid pro quo for Chandranathan.
“We would like to know what are the contributions of the former DGP to the state that the government is so indebted to him? Or is he a tool to be used for the benefit of those who are in power? Will this not go against the interest of serving officers and interfere with their duties and responsibilities?,” Basaiawmoit asked in a series of questions.
