Shillong, Mar 17: The West Garo Hills district administration has promulgated prohibitory orders under relevant provisions of the BNSS 2023 and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act 1990 in view of the prevailing law and order situation.
The prohibitory orders have been imposed based on reports indicating a likelihood of disturbances to public peace and tranquility. The region is still tense following last week’s civil unrest between tribal and non-tribal communities.
“The restrictions include prohibition of unlawful assemblies, processions and demonstrations without prior permission from the district administration,” the District Magistrate, Vibhor Aggarwal, stated.
Aggarwal said that the restrictions include the use of loudspeakers and public address systems and a ban on carrying arms, explosives or any objects capable of causing harm.
Further, the district administration also put a ban on activities such as organising training camps, inciting violence, damaging public or private property and dissemination of inflammatory content.
Meanwhile, the curfew in West Garo Hills has been further extended from 6am on March 18 to 6am on March 19 with a relaxation period of 12 hours from 6am to 6pm on March 18.
