Police have warned motorists not to overtake on the Umiam bridge while it is undergoing repairs.
In a press release issued today, the Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills), Vivek Syiem, said that traffic is open in both directions on the bridge but only on one lane on a shared basis.
“However, it has been noticed that some vehicles overtake while plying through the Umiam bridge leading to further traffic jams,” Syiem said.
Motorists have been told not to overtake on the bridge and those who fail to heed this warning will face punishment.
The SP also urged motorists to avoid using the bridge if possible and instead take the route via the Shillong Bypass.
The decades-old bridge is undergoing maintenance work to strengthen it and extend its lifespan. Work began in December and is expected to last four months.
