Shillong, Mar 1: Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit recently informed that the party has been frequenting Garo Hills region to establish itself before the 2028 Assembly election.
“We want the people of Garo Hills to know about our objectives, aims, goals and our principles,” Basaiawmoit told reporters.
Adding that this is the party’s mission, he said that the people of the state should understand that VPP truly represents regionalism in Meghalaya.
“We are not going to compromise on the interest of the indigenous people,” he said.
The VPP president said that with that kind of education/campaign the party is undertaking in Garo Hills, he said that he was glad to see that the response as of now is positive.
He said that the people of Garo Hills are looking up to the VPP as the only regional party who really is concerned about the interest of the tribals of Meghalaya.
When asked if, the party will seek the help of Dr. Mukul Sangma, who has a following in Garo Hills, Basaiawmoit, said that the VPP is a new political party and as repeatedly expressed, the party is not only just for winning elections, while this is another purpose, but the first intention of the party is to make people politically conscious.
“Any other political party will do anything just to win elections but for us we are not doing anything which is against the principle of the party,” he said.
The VPP said that unless a person understands or subscribes fully to the belief, principle and ideology of the party, it will not even enroll them as members.
“We will fight and hope to win an election. But we are not going to do anything just to win elections,” Basaiawmoit added.
The VPP chief also said that people are already forecasting that the fight in the 2028 polls will be between NPP and VPP.
“As of now there is a perception that VPP will do better in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and NPP in Garo Hills. But I am telling you it will be a different situation altogether once we enter the election,” he added.
