A three day online national seminar on ‘Sedimentation, Tectonics and Metallogeny of North East India’ hosted by North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) was inaugurated today.
During the inaugural program Prof. Devesh Walia, Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU welcomed the dignitaries, Council members, fellows of Geological Society of India and participants present and informed that the total of 800 participants registered for the National Seminar and 110 participants submitted the abstract and 30 participants submitted the full paper.
The National Seminar is first of its kind in the world being hosted by NEHU in India wherein invited talks from the eminent experts in the field of geosciences and Prestigious Endowment Lectures awarded by GSI, around 70 research presentations by young scientists from all over the India will be presented and discussed.
Prof. H. K. Gupta, President, Geological Society of India appreciated the initiative taken by NEHU for organizing such a grand program. He emphasized that the younger generations should take up the challenge and work enthusiastically for the growth and development. Prof. Gupta also put forth the point that in this region two great earthquakes have occurred 1897 and 1950, so is pertinent to understand the tectonics of the region as has impact on the great mineral wealth of the NE Indian Region.
Dr. D. K. Sinha, Director, Atomic Minerals Division, Hyderabad applauded the efforts to bring so many experts at one platform to discuss the various aspects of geological sciences, which are of paramount importance for growth and development of the region. He emphasized the association with the NEHU in the region for taking up the collaborative work to take forward the requirements of the nation at the forefront.
NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof. S. K. Srivastava in his address as chief guest stated that the region has good mineral wealth and needs to be explored including the minerals such as clay, limestone, granite, coal and even uranium. The people are awaiting for the development of the region and full mineral potential can only be explored by an integrated efforts. Further, stated that the region has potential to generate earthquake and by increasing the resilience and lowering vulnerability. Although, the seminar is being organized virtually but the spirits are not low and carry out the business as usual in the interest of the nation.
