Residents of 42 villages of West Khasi Hills bordering Kamrup district of Assam have today decided to staunchly oppose construction of Kulsi hydel project on Khri River by Brahmaputra Board.
A meeting of the villagers held at Ukiam village and attended by former legislator of Rambrai-Jyrngam, K Phlastingwell Pangniang decided to oppose the power project on grounds that most of the villages and cultivable land would be submerged if a dam was constructed at Khri River.
Pangniang said that he would take up the matter with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma to demand scrapping of the project.
