Dozens of residents of a village in West Garo Hills have written to Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to request a CBI probe into the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl, which had taken place on August 20.
Three men were accused of the crime in an FIR. However, one of them completely exonerated the other two and claimed that he was in a consensual relationship with the teenage girl. However, he was arrested by police as the girl was a minor.
The residents sought to clear the name of one of the two who were exonerated by the main accused, saying that he had an unquestionable alibi for the time that the rape is said to have taken place. He is a noted social activist, the letter said, but is the victim of a “political conspiracy”.
