After allegedly suffering from years of mistreatment, a resident of Nongwar Khlieh Shnong, under Shella constituency, has come out against the local Dorbar Shnong, claiming that it has destroyed her family’s agricultural land, built a road on her property and deprived them of electricity.
At a press conference today, Presmity Wanchand alleged that the Dorbar Shnong bulldozed her rights to her land by constructing an approach road to a tourist viewpoint in the area, which resulted in the destruction of her paddy fields and other vegetation that form the source of livelihood to her family.
Wanchand has filed at FIR with the Sohra police, who then conducted an inquiry in November, but little else has been done by the authorities.
“Now they (the Dorbar) have threatened me with dire consequences if I don’t leave this land, which belongs to me,” she said, adding that she will not give up one inch of her property.
Wanchand also claimed that the Rangbah Shnong, Kedion Diengdoh, has spitefully deprived her of a no-objection certificate (NOC) since 2016 that she needs in order to get an electricity connection, as well as a residential certificate and work under the national rural employment scheme (MGNREGS).
“I have been staying in Shillong because all our rights have been suppressed and job opportunities denied to us by the Dorbar Shnong there and we fear that if we return to our land the Dorbar Shnong, which has threatened us, will do something untoward,” she added.
