Shillong, Jan 27: The state government will look to activate village defence parties (VDPs) in villages along the India-Bangladesh border in view of the unsettled situation in the neighbouring country.
The situation in Bangladesh has been unstable since a revolution there in 2024 overthrew the rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds charge of the Home Department, said today that VDP members in the border villages will be given basic training so that they can handle the issue of illegal immigrants.
He also said that the BSF and the state police are coordinating to tackle illegal immigrants and the district administrations have been alerted on the issue as well.
