Shillong, Feb 4: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) won several awards at the science exhibition held during the Panchratna Guwahati of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.
Around 120 students and 12 faculty members from 17 departments represented USTM at the exhibition, presenting working models, research-based projects and functional prototypes that drew significant attention from visitors, academics and representatives from scientific and defence communities, a university release informed today.
USTM students won all the prizes in the ‘On-the-Spot Science Speech Competition’, demonstrating exceptional scientific understanding, confidence and communication skills, while also securing first prize by Nangram Gomtey, who spoke on earthquake-resistant building designs, second prize by Mussabir Islam, who gave an outstanding speech on Artificial Intelligence and third position by Nishat Tashim from the IA Ayurvedic Medical college who spoke on the food habits adopted during different seasons along with the consolation prizes across various exhibition categories.
The Department of Physics attracted special attention with a live solar spot viewing demonstration, while the Department of Mathematics presented the ‘Around the World Hamilton Model’.
Engineering departments showcased several practical and technology-driven models, including a solar-powered grass cutter, smart attendance system, ‘Money Mitra’ financial assistance model, smart hybrid energy management system, smart structures for existing conditions and a sustainable grey and ground water management system.
Drone applications, robotics-based models and electronic speed controllers for drones were developed by the Robotics Club of USTM, elephant-trained collision risk mitigation systems developed by the Zoology Department and life science departments such as Botany, Zoology, Applied Biology, Food Science, and Earth Science presented interdisciplinary models addressing environmental sustainability, biological applications and real-world scientific challenges.
